Understanding your DEF consumption rate
DEF consumption is directly tied to diesel fuel usage. Here are the key numbers every fleet manager and equipment operator should know.
DEF to diesel ratio
DEF consumption runs at approximately 2–5% of diesel fuel usage. For every 100 gallons of diesel your fleet burns, expect to consume 2–5 gallons of Diesel Exhaust Fluid. The exact rate depends on engine load, equipment type, and duty cycle.
Average fleet consumption
For most mixed-use commercial fleets operating under typical conditions, 3% is a reliable planning figure. Highway-dominant fleets typically run closer to 2%, while heavy construction or mining equipment may reach 4–5% under sustained high load.
DEF shelf life
Properly stored DEF has a shelf life of 1–2 years. When planning bulk DEF delivery schedules, align your delivery frequency with your consumption rate to maintain fresh, ISO 22241-compliant fluid at all times. Avoid over-ordering into storage.
Factors that affect your DEF consumption rate
Why does DEF consumption vary between 2% and 5%? These are the key variables that determine where your fleet lands in that range.
Engine load & duty cycle
Higher engine loads generate more NOx, requiring more DEF injection. Highway trucks at cruise speed consume closer to 2%, while equipment running at full load continuously may approach 5%.
Engine model & year
Newer engines with more sophisticated SCR calibration tend to be more DEF-efficient. Some engine models are known for higher or lower consumption rates — consult your manufacturer specs for engine-specific data.
Extreme temperatures
Cold temperatures can affect SCR system warm-up time, temporarily increasing DEF consumption during startup. Extremely hot ambient conditions may also affect dosing efficiency in some systems.
Stop-and-go vs. highway
Urban and stop-and-go duty cycles generally result in higher DEF consumption per mile than steady-state highway operation, due to more frequent engine load changes and SCR temperature cycling.
DEF quality & concentration
Off-spec DEF with urea concentration below ISO 22241 minimums may cause the SCR system to inject more fluid to compensate, increasing apparent consumption while reducing NOx reduction efficiency.
SCR system condition
A degraded or fouled SCR catalyst requires more DEF to achieve the same NOx reduction. A sudden increase in DEF consumption is often an early indicator of SCR system issues that warrant inspection.
